      A graduate of the University of Aberdeen, John has been a principal in private practice since 1979. Initially as a Partner in Dundas & Wilson C.S. - one of the UK's leading commercial and corporate firms - and latterly as Senior Partner in Cooper & Hay Advocates - one of Aberdeen's oldest and most respected private client firms. He joined James & George Collie in 2005 when James & George Collie and Cooper & Hay joined forces. 

      John is a property lawyer in the widest sense and has decades of experience in all aspects of both commercial and residential property work and can advise on a wide range of property issues including purchases, sales and leases, site acquisitions and disposals, developments and associated financing arrangements and securities.

      This broad range of expertise means that John is a member of both our Commercial and Residential Property teams. In addition John has the responsibility for our specialist in-house Relocation department.

      Biography

      Innes Miller is a Partner in the Commercial Department of the Firm, specialising in Corporate Law matters. Innes has over 20 years Corporate Law experience, and has been involved in a number of high value and high profile corporate transactions. Previously a Partner at other legal firms in both Edinburgh and Aberdeen, Innes has been at the Firm since April 2005, and continues with his remit to expand the corporate services offered by the Firm.

      Away from work, Innes is well known in the local golf circles, having previously been champion at both Royal Aberdeen and Banchory Golf Clubs and representing the North East District at all levels. Like some of the other Partners in the Firm, Innes has also been a tutor in the Diploma in Legal Practice at both Aberdeen and Robert Gordon Universities, where he has tutored in the Company and Commercial Course.

      Biography

      Duncan has been a partner in the firm’s Litigation Department for over twenty years. He is the head of the Litigation Department and acts for a variety of commercial and individual clients in all areas of civil litigation. He has particular experience and a reputation in contract and partnership disputes, insolvency, debt collection and family law matters. Married with three children, he is also the firm’s Cashroom Partner. He is now an enthusiastic cyclist and guitarist.

    • Graham Garden - Court Partner (Stonehaven)

      Biography

      GRAHAM GARDEN, our Court Partner graduated from Aberdeen University and joined Kinnear & Falconer in 1986.

      Specialising in family law, his work encompasses separations, divorce, disputes on residence and contact, cohabitations, civil partnership and social work referrals. It also includes adoption and permanence orders. In addition, he is trained in family law mediation and in collaborative law.

      Graham is on the panel of curators ad litem and reporting officers for Stonehaven and Aberdeen Sheriff Courts for which he is also called upon to prepare Bar reports in connection with disputed residence/contact actions. Another area of his work involves representing children and the parents of children who appear before the Children’s Panel.

      Appointed by the Law Society of Scotland as a civil legal aid peer reviewer, Graham is also an external examiner to the Robert Gordon University School of Business Management.

      A member of Stonehaven Golf Club, the Rotary Club of Stonehaven and, just to add to his busy schedule, he is part of Stonehaven Community Development, a group designed to help improve recreational and sporting facilities in the town. Graham is married with two daughters.

      Biography

      Aberdeen-born Denis graduated from Aberdeen University in 1975 and served his apprenticeship with John Laurie & Co before moving to Kinnear & Falconer two years later. He became a full partner with that firm 1981, then senior partner in 1989 until the merger with James & George Collie.

      While Denis has concentrated principally in general practice, he specialises in criminal law.

      He is chairman of the Kincardine and Deeside Solicitors Faculty .

      Married to Fiona, they have three sons and a daughter, Denis is vice-captain of Stonehaven Golf Club as well as being a member of Edzell Golf Club.

      His other sporting love is football. He is an Aberdeen FC season-ticket holder and is a former president of the Noth-east of Scotland Junior Football Association.

Educated at Robert Gordon’s College and Aberdeen University, Tony, a former holder of the Scottish and British University Badminton Titles was capped for Scotland at all levels of that sport and represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Games at Edmonton in 1978. He also won many North East tennis titles during his tennis career and represented Scotland at that sport in France.

      A keen athlete, he completed 26 marathons which goes a long way to explain his two metal hips and aged knee. He is well known in North East business and sporting circles having held various public appointments over the years, including founder Chairman of Aberdeen Sports Council, Chairman of Aberdeen Petroleum Sports and Leisure Club, Governor of Oakbank School, Chairman of the Russell Anderson Testimonial Committee, Chairman of the Chris Anderson Advisory Trust, Director of UCAN Urology Cancer Charity, Chairman of Friends of Duthie Park, Board Member of Sport Aberdeen who run all the sporting facilities in Aberdeen as well as advisor to Sport Scotland and several different sports in the past.

      In 2007 his sporting achievements were recognised by selection into the Aberdeen Sporting Hall of Fame and in 2010 his inclusion in the book “Granite Legends”. In 2008, he was accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a Specialist in Liquor Licensing Law. In addition, he is a Burgess of Guild for the City of Aberdeen and was President of the Society of Advocates in Aberdeen in 2010.

      When he has any leisure time, he enjoys all types of sport, classic cars, gardening and visiting parks and botanical gardens, as well as New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc!

      Janet Hood, is a consultant with the firm specialising in liquor licensing and is the Proprietor of Janet Hood Consulting, serving the licensed, hospitality and tourism businesses of Scotland.

      An Edinburgh University graduate, Janet is also a board member of the Scottish Tourism Forum and a member of other bodies, including being on the board of the Law Society of Scotland, to which she is an accredited specialist in liquor licensing.

      A former local authority solicitor with a range of councils, including Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire, Perth-born Janet aims to make James & George Collie the first port of call for services required by the licensed trade in Aberdeen and the North-east.

      ANGIE MCKENNA, our Office & HR Manager, originally from sunny South Africa, joined the Firm in 2010 having had considerable experience with other Law Firms in the City. Angie oversees the everyday running of our 3 offices, including management of staff and Personnel issues.

      A mother of three and an aspiring runner, she takes part in several 5k and 10k races every year. She completed the grueling White Caterthun Half Marathon in 2009 and her most exciting achievement was completing the London Marathon, also in 2009. She has also supported the Women's Race for Life for the past 8 years.

      FORBES MCLENNAN, a former pupil of Aberdeen Grammar School and graduate of Aberdeen University, joined the firm as a partner in 2005. Prior to joining James & George Collie, Forbes was a partner in the long established local firm of Cooper & Hay. He has been in private practice since 1981 and has dealt with a wide variety of legal work. He now concentrates on conveyancing and private client work.

      Biography

      A native of Paisley, Anne-Maryse graduated in Law from Aberdeen University in 1985 and began her legal career in the City. She became a partner in George Mathers & Co in 1990 and in 1994 she became Aberdeen's first female sole practioner when she formed her own firm of Churchill and Company. Ann-Maryse has been assumed as a partner within James & George Collie with effect from 1st November 2009.

      In joining us she brings with her not only the clients and the business contacts she won and developed in Churchill and Company but also her expertise in conveyancing, private client and general chamber work. Anne-Maryse says "One of my primary motivations in joining James & George Collie is to offer a wider range of legal services to my existing clients".

      Anne-Maryse will continue her long association with Aberdeen University as an Honorary Lecturer in Conveyancing and Professional Ethics.

      Her talents extend beyond the law and teaching - she originally trained in classical ballet and attributes her hard work and discipline to the years that she spent as a dancer.
